How SkyBlue works

A recently discovered non-visual photo receptor in the human eye—called the ipRGC—has bolstered our understanding of the eye’s function and has opened a literal window into the workings of our circadian biology. The ipRGC has little visual function but is highly sensitive to the “blue-sky” wavelength of the sun’s light—and is responsible for sending signals to the body’s biological clock to regulate our circadian rhythms. These signals help the body delineate between day and night, allowing it to organize a myriad of biological processes and behaviors—including sleep and energy.

BIOS SkyBlue lighting is the only circadian lighting solution designed from human biology to provide the specific light that our bodies actually need. SkyBlue lighting communicates directly with our circadian biology through the ipRCG by producing the natural blue-sky light wavelength to simulate the biological process, promoting better sleep, health and well-being.


There is some confusion around whether blue light is harmful or helpful. In fact, both are true. There are two regions of blue light — a good blue light region and a bad blue light region. The good blue light appears more like a “blue-sky” color, while the bad blue light appears as a more royal blue hue and is defined by the Illuminating Engineering Society as Blue Light Hazard. While our circadian biology needs the blue-sky wavelengths, the royal blue wavelengths have been shown to be hazardous to eye health.

Current LED technology, unfortunately, has it backwards. The issue with traditional electric lighting is that it actually has a trough in the “good” blue-sky region and a peak in the “bad” blue light hazard region. Traditional technology has been putting energy in the wrong area. While the resulting white light from traditional LED and BIOS may appear identical to the naked eye, the actual spectrum is drastically different.
